Our Giving Pledge

Effective Date: 1 October 2026

If you didn't know, our company, products, and services are named after the osprey bird. The osprey nearly vanished from North America in the middle of the last century. The DDT insecticide washed off farmland, concentrated in fish, and thinned the shells of the eggs that ate them. The species came back because people counted nests, built platforms, banned the pesticide, and kept watching. We think a company that borrows the bird's name owes it something.

The commitment

Osprey Project LLC gives 10% of its net revenue, from every product and every customer, to the Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation (SCCF), a 501(c)(3) public charity in Sanibel, Florida (EIN 59-1205087). Net revenue means what the company actually receives after payment processing fees, refunds, and disputes, before any other expense. It is not a promotion, a campaign, or a percentage of profit, and it applies whether or not the company is profitable. The pledge lasts for as long as Osprey Project LLC operates under its present ownership. If SCCF should ever cease to exist, the pledge passes to whichever charity carries on its osprey conservation work.

The pledge is recorded in a signed Declaration of Charitable Commitment. It ends if the company is sold or its ownership changes, but every dollar accrued up to that day is still paid.

Why SCCF

SCCF carries forward the work of The International Osprey Foundation (TIOF), which was founded on Sanibel Island in 1981 to protect and preserve ospreys worldwide. For more than forty years, TIOF volunteers built and maintained nest platforms, monitored nests through every breeding season, assisted with emergency responses for injured birds, and developed educational material about the species. On 1 January 2026, TIOF formally transferred its mission, programs, and volunteer network to SCCF, and TIOF's osprey monitoring now runs inside SCCF's research department.

SCCF itself was founded in 1967 as a land trust and is the largest private landowner on Sanibel Island, managing more than 1,800 acres of preserved habitat on the islands and several hundred more across Southwest Florida. Its programs cover water quality research through its Marine Laboratory, sea turtle and shorebird monitoring, native landscaping, habitat and wildlife management, environmental policy, and education through the Sanibel Sea School. It publishes its Form 990 and is listed with Charity Navigator, GuideStar, and the IRS Tax Exempt Organization Search under EIN 59-1205087.

How it works

Revenue is measured automatically from the company's payment records, and the pledge is set aside from it as it comes in. Donations are made to SCCF on a rolling basis once a modest amount has accrued, and at least once a year regardless, so the pledge never sits idle. Each donation is recorded against the revenue it covers, and those records are retained.

The figure at the top of this page is the lifetime total actually donated, not the amount pledged. It is updated after each donation is made.

What is counted

All revenue from Osprey products and services from every customer. Refunds and disputes are deducted, as are the payment processor fees, since the company never receives that money. Nothing else is deducted. Voluntary tips to the open-source project through Ko-fi are not company revenue and are not counted.
